Growth Through Dialogue

“Gaining knowledge is the first step to wisdom.  Sharing it is the first step to humanity.” – unknown

Here at DEPDC/GMS we function on a platform of prevention through education.  For us this takes many forms: alternative curriculum, workshops, cultural exchange opportunities, and the sharing of one’s experiences and knowledge.  Within our walls we all adopt the roles of student and teacher. This is an unspoken code of conduct that binds us all together. We will share the knowledge we possess to better the lives of others, and we will have the humility to acknowledge our own shortcomings.  Regardless of accolades, you must shed your pride at our gate, like an unnecessary winter coat. The Nobel Peace Prize nominee can learn generosity from the barefoot first grader. A maturing teen can provide insight on societal structures to a weathered professor.

This week in honor of that mindset, we welcomed the Asian Research Centre for Migration from Thailand’s distinguished Chulalongkorn University to present their recently completed research and receive feedback from members and friends of DEPDC.  The research presented focused on results from a recent case study on Thai-Myanmar border collaboration to prevent migrant children from falling victim to human trafficking. The study was carried out with the intent of creating a standard manual of protocol for aid and government workers along the Thai border.  The research team presented their findings, followed by sessions of questions and input by the attendees.

A total of 32 attendees traveled from across northern Thailand and the Shan State to review the research and provide their input.  Attendees included MYN and SYSTERM alumni, who were able to provide their expertise on the Greater Mekong Subregion and the societal issues facing its inhabitants.

We would like to extend a thank you to the Thailand Research Fund and Chulalongkorn for making the journey to discuss these important issues with us.  We look forward to future collaborations in the fight against risk migration and human trafficking.

Extra news:  Starting April 8 – 12th our fundraising platform, Global Giving, will be hosting it’s annual Little by Little Matching Campaign.  All donations will be matched at 60%. If you would like to donate and help us continue our projects you can do so here.  Thank you to all of our donors.  Without your generous donations we would not be here.
