Opportunity in Mae Sai
DEPDC/GMS is a non-profit, non-governmental organization headquartered in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The organization works to prevent and to protect girls and boys from being trafficked into exploitative working conditions, the commercial sex industry in particular. DEPDC/GMS provides crucial preventative measures such as education, vocational and life skills training, accommodation, protection, community outreach, and leadership development to at-risk youth in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. The organization coordinates a multitude of programs and projects at distinct sites, located throughout Chiang Rai Province in the districts of Mae Sai, Chiang Khong, and Mae Chan. Each site functions differently but works toward the common goal of empowering youth to empower themselves and their peers and communities to combat human trafficking and exploitative child labor.
In order to provide the organization with steady volunteer support, which is critical to the smooth functioning of all projects and the future of DEPDC/GMS, our International Department accepts applications on a rolling basis.
Position: International Volunteer
Location: DEPDC / GMS Coordination Center in Mai Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand
Commitment: Six months minimum, one year preferred; plus, if necessary, 30 to 40 hours of intensive Thai language lessons – 3 to 4 weeks – prior to arrival to Mae Sai. Essentially, for those who do not already have a basic command of Thai, this is a 7-month volunteer commitment.
Start Date: Availability based on time period and skill set. We consider applications received up to 12 months in advance, but will consider applications submitted within a shorter time frame.
Benefits and Costs: Volunteers must fully fund their own flights, visa(s), language lessons, accommodations, living costs, and other necessities while living in Mae Sai. They do not receive a stipend nor are they required to pay any fees for a long-term placement of 6 months or longer. Some volunteers have financed their stay through private fundraising and university scholarships.
Visa(s): The organization can provide documentation support for the volunteer’s Thailand Visa application, though only for the Type O for Volunteering option. However, Thailand’s immigration laws change frequently and typically without warning, and Thai embassies and consulates vary greatly in the types and lengths of visas that they offer. While we can advise a volunteer about the types of visa that are generally available, it is up to the applicant to research the options available from a particular Thai embassy / consulate.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Each volunteer’s role is different, depending on skills, experience, and interests, as well as on the needs of the organization. Volunteers are supervised by the International Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers in Mae Sai can take on a variety of roles and responsibilities, which may include but are not limited to:
- Teach English at the Half Day School, Community Learning Center, and to DEPDC/GMS staff
- Facilitate extracurricular activities with Half Day School students, aged 4-18
- Write for the DEPDC / GMS blog and newsletter
- Produce and coordinate social media and communications
- Write grant proposals and grant reports
- Assist with the recruitment and training of new volunteers
- Online fundraising and marketing
- Receive visitors and give presentations on human trafficking and DEPDC / GMS
- Attend events and meetings
- Photography and Videography
- Assist in other areas based on skill set and need
We are open to new ideas and projects which utilize volunteers’ unique strengths and creativity. This position is ideal for someone with long-term goals or interests related to alternative education, non-profit administration, communications and media, child protection, and human trafficking prevention.
Restrictions: We accept only individual applications for long-term volunteer applications. Applications submitted concurrently by couples or groups will not be considered.
