What’s Cooking?

At the end of last year, DEPDC/GMS staff from Mae Sai paid a visit to our sister site, the Chiang Khong Center. Alongside Chiang Khong’s Youth Leaders from the Kiang Rim Khong Project – an organization to educate the community about HIV/AIDS and how to protect and prevent the spread of this virus – staff participated in a Staff Development Workshop. A member of the community, whose goods are popular at the weekly Chiang Khong markets, led the workshop.

She trained the staff to prepare Thai desserts, as well as Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai cuisine. Vietnamese egg rolls, Chinese fried rice, Som Tam (Spicy Papaya Salad), Tamarind and Peanut Juice, different Chili sauces, and numerous kinds of dessert adorned the tables over the course of this three-day workshop. Needless to say, no one went hungry!

The staff will now incorporate these cooking skills into the vocational training for students at the Half-Day school, Mae Sai, and at the Chiang Khong Center, whereas the Kiang Rim Khong Project will use them directly to raise money for their future educational endeavors.
