Baan Doi, Home and Healing Center for Children, is an organisation located near Mae Sai that gives children, who have lost their parents to AIDS or are themselves infected with HIV a new home and caring family. Baan Doi was founded by Graziella Ramponi, a former DEPDC volunteer, and Barbara Meisl. They also count two former DEPDC residents among their staff.
After the Baan Doi family had attended DEPDC’s production of Peter Pan earlier this year, Graziella and Barbara decided to stage a play at Baan Doi, too. Graziella adapted Hänsel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm, and even translated the famous Hänsel and Gretel song from German into Thai – click here for the video. After six weeks of rehearsals and crafting of props it was time for the big night, and of course, many visitors, among them all of DEPDC’s international volunteers, flocked to Baan Doi to see Hänsel and Gretel. The play was a great success and ended with a big applause for everybody.
